About the Ranch

Dakota Pride Chinchillas is the ranch of Laura Dixon in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Like a lot of good things, it started small — with a sterling grey girl named Pebbles, one of the first chinchillas Laura brought home around 2022. Pebbles arrived already expecting, and her litter became the foundation of the herd — and Laura’s first-ever chinchilla sale. She is still here today as our founder and matriarch.

From that start, the herd has grown by plan rather than by accident. Every pairing is chosen on purpose, every kit’s parents are recorded, and the program is balanced toward the colors we do best instead of simply getting bigger.

Our Approach

We breed for color and clarity — mosaic, ebony, beige, white, and sterling grey, with a rare black pearl line in the program as well. But color is only half the story. Temperament matters here: our senior sire Milo, one of only three extra dark ebonies on the place, is valued as much for his calm, sweet disposition as for his bloodline, and that kind of disposition is something we select for on purpose.

A few of the names behind the program:

When you buy from Dakota Pride, you’re buying from a ranch that can tell you your chinchilla’s parents, its birth date, and the line it comes from — because we wrote it all down. That’s the pride in Dakota Pride.
